Altered Pet Championship

The Altered Dog Classes are set aside to allow the pet dog owners an opportunity to show their dogs and to earn a title classified as "Altered Champion." These classes, therefore, are only open to dogs that have not otherwise earned a Championship. Dogs must be AKC registered or must have an ILP number from AKC. Dogs without an AKC number or an ILP number cannot be shown in the regular Altered Classes but may be shown in a "Just for Fun" Pet Dog Class, provided one is offered. These dogs are not eligible for an Altered Pet Championship.

CLASSES
Puppies (9 to 18 months)
Junior Adult (18 months to 3 years)
Senior Adult (3 years to 8 years)
Veteran (8+ years)

Although conformation is taken into consideration by the judge, the number one criteria is temperament as these are family pet dogs. Exhibitors are encouraged to "show off" their dog's temperament and personality to the judge. Dogs must be approachable and friendly. Disqualifications include any dog snapping, growling or attempting to bite other exhibitors, other dogs or the judge; docked tail, albinism. Shyness (not to be confused with aloofness) is a fault.

An Altered Pet Dog can earn points towards its championship even if it is the only dog shown. A complete Point Schedule is below. The classes will be held in accordance with a conformation event. All handlers will be expected to move dogs around the ring at the judge's discretion. Dogs should be well groomed and must be on a nylon or leather leash with an appropriate collar. Pinch collars are not allowed. Toys and treats are allowed in the ring. No outside agents or professional handlers, please.

POINTS
A dog must earn 100 points to become an Altered Champion. This must include at least one "Best Altered" or "Best Opposite Sex Altered" win.

POINT SCHEDULE
5 points for Class win
10 points for Best Male/Female
15 points for Best Altered
10 points for Best Opposite Sex Altered
5 additional points for every 1st place Class male/female defeated

The maximum number of points a dog can earn per show, assuming they took "Best Altered" and assuming there was a first in each class (totaling 15 points—this counts all other classes, not the class the winning dog was entered in) would be 45 points (5 for their class win, 10 for Best Male or Female, 15 for Best Altered and the additional 15 assuming there was a first place in each class.)

The minimum number of points a dog could earn per show (assuming it was the only dog competing) would be 30 (5 for their class win, 10 for Best Male or Female and 15 for Best Altered). For a WGSDCI Altered Championship all wins must be earned in the WGSDCI. No points/wins can be carried over from another club. (Proposal passed at the 2013 National membership meeting)
